Featured Employer: the Environmental Defense Fund
This Week’s Noteworthy Find: The Environmental Defense Fund @EnvDefenseFund
We are fans of organizations that invest in the talent needed to deliver a great employee experience. A recent job post from EDF for an Associate Vice President of Human Resources in New York City caught our attention. We also found positions related to employee learning and development and storytelling. All good signs. Further investigation by our team revealed a deep-rooted belief in the power of diversity, as it relates to the workplace and our environment.
The connection EDF makes between ecological diversity and enterprise strength and resilience is fascinating.
"A basic principle of ecology is that diversity in an ecosystem fosters strength and resilience."
A page dedicated to diversity states, “By creating a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion, we will similarly foster greater strength and resilience within and beyond the organization.“
We were also happy to learn about the Chief Diversity Officer, Jorge Consuegra (LinkedIn). Jorge brings significant experience from financial services, technology, media, and nonprofit sectors. We appreciate the connection he sees between diversity, culture and brand.
Another thing we look for are groups where employees have a voice on issues related to culture. We were also pleased to learn about the EDF’s Diversity Committee, established in 2007 as a group representing employees and staff. Keeping anything going for 13 years shows commitment. Looks like they work hard to embed diversity and inclusion into all aspects of the business, and operations. They even have a Diversity Fellowship Program. Watch the video here. Lots of employee impact stories here which we like to see.
One thing we also look for when calling out an employer is authentication of the employee experience via employee stories - even better - intern stories. On the career page, we found several employee stories from real staff. Check out featured staff profiles https://www.edf.org/people. We also went back in time to find a great story from a 2012 intern who acknowledged the deep commitment to team success - at all levels. Even the current President Fred Krupp was an EDF intern!
Our review of Glassdoor found a healthy balance of employee feedback that emphasized a good culture, great mission, and hard work. Tone and culture are driven from the top and the CEO gets a very high rating of 99%. We don’t see this often for similar-sized organizations. All review sites reveal opportunities for management to improve things. We appreciate their responses.
Our Takeaway:
Highlighting the parallels between diversity, equity, and inclusion at work, and a thriving ecosystem caught our attention. So true. Strong successful organizations get this. EDF seems to be one of them. Other leaders in organization embracing diversity should consider sharing this connection with their team. The EDFs commitment in this area, along with efforts to share employee stories, and a CEO who has significant employee support, makes them our stand out employer of the week.
